The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
